SECTION

The concept for the design is WABI SABI, an unspoken intrinsic concept in Japanese culture that values imperfections and craftsmanship, and celebrates change over time. The aim of the project was to create a solution to discourage a throw away culture, and to give young people in particular a community space to improve wellbeing. I created a workshop space for upcycling events, and a retail space for upcycled homeware and upcycling tools.

RETAIL SPACE
|
The retail area is a space to buy upcycled/restored/handcrafted homeware (made in the workshop), as well as tools + materials for upcycling projects.

CURTAINS + DISPLAY UNITS
|
One of the key design features throughout the whole design is the use of curtains. The inspiration came from shoji screens - their slight translucency, their flexibility, and the way they can divide the space and create zones.
Having this curtain system means that the backdrops can be changed really easily and smaller display areas can be created or opened up. Part of the appeal of charity shops and second hand shops is discovering hidden treasures, and having zones to explore is creating a similar effect whilst maintaining a high end look that challenges negative associations with second hand.
As the curtain system will be constantly changing, I created 3 display elements that can be used in combination in various places in the store.
